    Description

How Do Metal Barcodes Work and What Are They Used For?

Barcodes are a ubiquitous, widely-understood technology. At a basic level, they consist of black lines of varying thicknesses and heights, white space and numbers. These encode unique information about a product which can be retrieved when the barcode is scanned.

Important for asset management and control, barcodes enable inventory to be easily tracked and managed, improving efficiency. Barcodes associate a unique number with each product and can contain information on the supplier, dimensions, weight and variable data such as stock levels.

In many environments where barcodes can be required — catering, sports, warehousing, washroom service, electronics and assembly, marine and more — products may encounter abrasion, UV light, extreme temperature and even chemicals. To ensure their long-term legibility and functionality, a solution manufactured from quality materials using quality processes can be essential.

Our Processes For A Robust, High-performance Barcoding Solution

We’re proud to offer a range of in-house anodising, digital printing, laser marking and etching processes depending on the application of your product.

    • Anodised aluminium: Using our state-of-the-art in-house anodising plant, we can print the barcodes into the open pores of electrically charged raw aluminium, before sealing the details into the aluminium. This creates an anodic layer that protects the printed barcode. These are suitable for outdoor applications and represent a durable option for the outdoor and sports industry.
    • Laser-marked stainless steel: This process removes the surface of the stainless steel using a digitally-controlled laser beam, providing precise barcodes and detail. For a marine grade finish, these can be manufactured using 316 stainless steel. 316 stainless steel differs from 304 due to the addition of molybdenum, which greatly increases corrosion resistance.
    • Etched-through stainless steel: For the ultimate in durability, we can cut through stainless steel to provide a fully etched through barcode. This can also house a human readable number. This has been nicknamed the ‘1000 degree barcode’ — it can survive in extremely hot temperatures such as ovens and furnaces.

All of these barcode solutions can be supplied with a fixing method to suit your application, whether that’s fixing holes, adhesive or both.
